MRS. M. P. PENSON
TENBY
In the death of Mrs. Mary Patricia Penson, reported last week, Tenby has lost a much loved and respected resident. She was 91.
Mrs. Penson, of 55 Knowling Mead, had been in failing health for the past year, although her death at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen, came as a shock to her many family and friends.
Following the death of their mother, nine-year-old Mary and younger brother Billy moved from Llandrindod Wells to live with her aunt, Mrs. Doris Lewis and family in St. Mary’s Street. Her warm and kindly nature - to remain gifts throughout Mary’s life - quickly endeared her to schoolmates at the National Parochial and an army of pals never to be found too far from the ‘Iron Bar’ or ‘Kay’ sands.
Seeds were also sown for her lifelong love of books and music. Her beautiful soprano voice was utilised by St. Mary’s Church Choir, while later Mrs. Penson entered fully into the social life surrounding her husband Hywel’s membership of Tenby Male Choir.
Courtship had blossomed from the time they worked in adjacent premises: Hywel in Ace’s Garage and Mary in Diment’s Steam Laundry. Mary’s tender years were no hurdle to her becoming manager, a position she held for most of her 12 years with the firm.
The couple moved to the recently constructed Knowling Mead in 1956, soon establishing firm friendships with neighours. Mr. Penson died 23 years ago.
Devoted to her family, Mrs. Penson did a variety of seasonal work over the years, while she was in her late 70s when she finally retired.
As a young woman, Mary served as a member of the Red Cross Pembroke Five Hundred and later, as an agent for the National Savings stamps scheme.
Until ill health prevented, she remained a stalwart of St. Mary’s, having been a member of both the Young Wives and Mothers’ Union groups. Mrs. Penson had also been a member of New Hedges WI, being actively involved in a number of their stage productions.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Kate Wright, of Penally, and sons, Mr. Billy Penson, Tenby and Mr. Brian Penson, Worcester. There are grandchildren and great-grandchildren, together with Mr. Sonnie Perkins (brother) and cousin, Mrs. Myrna Morgan.
The funeral is next Monday, February 8, with a service at 12.30 pm at St. Mary’s Church, Tenby, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, at 1.45 pm.
