MRS. J. O'BRIEN LOGIN

Mrs. Jenny O'Brien had a zest for life and strong sense of duty that gave unique impetus to everything she did. Whether it was farming, tourism, running her own radio station or, her latest project, editing Carmarthenshire Life Magazine, she brought an extraordinary level of passion and commitment that never dimmed with age. Jenny and her late husband Terry moved to Wales from London in 1974. Both had long considered the country their home - Terry was born in Llanelli and Jenny's family came from Cardigan, and the decision to buy a farm in Molyegrove, near Cardigan, was a natural progression. For several years they operated a pony trekking stables, raised sheep and beef and were among the first farmers in the region to introduce European breeds to the more, traditional Aberdeen Angus stock. In 1981, they relocated to Troedyrhiw, Crymych, where they continued farming briefly, until returning to their original professions as film and radio producers. In London, Jenny had initiated and managed the British Tourist Authority's radio department and her stories were regularly broadcast around the world. Priding themselves as a husband and wife team, Jenny and Terry launched Preseli Video which quickly established itself as one of the leading production companies in the country. They produced films for Dyfed-Powys Police, training programmes for commercial companies and a tourism video about the magnificent Milford Haven waterway. Always looking to the future, Jenny was particularly enthusiastic about helping young people. This brought her into contact with the Prince of Wales Trust where she volunteered for many years as a young business adviser, and also the Llanelli-based enterprise agency, Foothold. Her relationship with Foothold began in 1992 when she and Terry produced a promotional video for the organisation. She went on to become a director and a chairman and vice-chairman of two boards. At the age at which most people retire, Jenny decided to reinvent herself and begin yet another career. In 1997 she started Wales Radio International, a pioneering internet audio site. Jenny began broadcasting Celtic Notes from her studio in a spare bedroom of her house in Login, near Whitland. Within a short space of time, the weekly half-hour programme about the music, people and places of Wales became an international hit. It was initially broadcast on Merlin Communications short-wave radio transmission service from London, but became so popular that it went on to be distributed independently. By that time her sights were set on new challenges. After the death of her husband Terry in 2001, Jenny went to work for Radio Pembrokeshire. There she honed her broadcasting skills to tackle news and features, making invaluable use of her vast network of friends and community contacts. In the months before she died she was full of optimism about the future. Her new passion was editing Carmarthenshire Life Magazine and in typical fashion she had thrown herself into learning the technology and principles of page design and desktop publishing. On January 5, aged 73, she suffered a heart attack and died peacefully in her sleep at home. She is survived by her brother David and her two children, Mark and Jane.

MRS. R. A. JAMES (nee Flatau)

Rosalyn Anne James, of Holyhead, passed away at Penrhos Stanley Hospital, Holyhead, on Saturday, January 19, after a short battle against cancer.

Rosalyn was born in Tenby on October 31, 1941, the younger of twins born to Mike and Molly Flatau nee Morgan. Mike Flatau served as an officer with the Chindits, whilst Molly was serving in the WRAC at the time of their marriage. After the war, the Flataus moved to Rhodesia, where Mike served in the Police Force. Unfortunately, Mike died when Robin and Rosalyn were only 10 and the family returned to Tenby. The twins attended Greenhill Grammar School where Rosalyn found a natural aptitude for languages, particularly French, and spent several summer holidays in France with her pen friend and lifelong friend Nicole. On leaving Greenhill Grammar School, Rosalyn furthered her French studies at Bristol University, then joined the Army as an Officer Cadet. On leaving the Army, the ever-restless Rosalyn attended St. Godric's Secretarial College in Hamsptead, then worked for several years in London as a temp, before joining the staff of The Times in London, eventually becoming personal secretary to the Editor. In this capacity, she met a number of leading figures of the time, including Charlie Chaplin and Lord George Brown, then Foreign Secretary. The lure of Africa proved too much for the twins, so Robin moved to South Africa and Rosalyn back to Rhodesia, where she joined the civilian staff of the Police Force. Eventually she became personal secretary to the Commissioner of Police and continued in that role after the former colony became fully independent as Zambia. At this time she met her first husband, Adam Tennant, and they returned to Tenby, where their children Michelle and Jason were born. After a divorce, Rosalyn met her second husband, David James, and eventually moved to Anglesey. After a second divorce, Rosalyn returned to work and became personal secretary to the Sealink port financial controller in Holyhead. When Sealink scaled down its operation in Holyhead, Rosalyn worked at Royal Air Force Valley until her retirement in 2005. In the last decade, Rosalyn revelled in her role as a grandmother to her three grandchildren. In a life full of peaks and troughs, Rosalyn never lost her sense of humour and could always be relied upon to see the humorous side of life, even the tragic death of her twin brother Robin. She will be sorely missed by her daughter Michele Gardener and husband Guy, her three grandchildren Ethan, Drew and Jasmin and her son Jason, together with a host of friends around the world. A memorial service was held at Bangor Crematorium yesterday (Thursday). The ashes will be committed to the sea off her beloved Tenby at a later date. There were family flowers only, with donations, if so wished, to Macmillan Cancer Support, c/o Walsh Funeral Directors, Penrhyn, Longford Road, Anglesey.
