Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the grand finale of this year’s November Challenge.

The November Challenge started in 2015 and was founded by Matthew Evans in an attempt to help educate the benefits of running to our youth, make it fun, inclusive and at the same time raise funds for local and international charities.

Last year, the funds built a school in Nairobi, funded the teachers for three years and kitted the school out with books etc. It also raised thousands for Thyroid Cancer support group in Wales.

This year, the campaign is raising funds for CALM and Challenge Aid, again funding further school development in Nairobi.

Hundreds of children and adults have again signed up for one of two challenges. The main one being to run one mile a day for 30 days straight.

Matthew says: “This is a great way to create habits at home or in school and it doesn’t take a long time. More importantly, it needs to be fun. We have many children making up games as they walk or run their mile every day. One of the biggest effects of this challenge is the one it has on parents! Many go on to run a 10k or even further the following year. We have many companies also encouraging staff to run a mile a day too, so it is capturing the imagination of many.

“Our other Challenge is The Beast. This one is targeted at the more endurance athletes and will test them beyond anything they have done before. It’s about adding an additional mile every day, starting with one mile and moving through to 30 miles tomorrow (Saturday). This week is tough, seriously tough. The athletes will run 189 miles in just seven days! No recovery, just back to back long runs.”

Tomorrow (Saturday) will be the final day and everyone is invited! Even if you have not done a mile a day, just go online www.novemberchallenge.com and sign up. There are a multitude of distances from 1, 2, 4, 8, 13, 17, 20 and 30-mile runs and run in a very specific way.

Matthew aka Captain Cymru will start at 9 am from Saundersfoot harbour and will then rendezvous with all the starts along the way, picking up the 20-mile runners first, then the 17 and so on until the final few miles where all the children join in. All finishers will get a unique November Challenge medal too.
