NARBERTH' Nick Evans is well-known in Pembrokeshire sporting circles as a prominent cricketer, a former footballer and a keep fit enthusiast. He will face one of his biggest challenges yet in March 2008 as he has been selected to walk over part of the Great Wall of China to raise funds for a breast cancer charity. The ageless spin bowler still dons his whites to play league and cup cricket at the age of 66. He thinks that he has been fortunate to play and watch cricket all over the world and is anxious to put something back into a charitable good cause. Looking forward to March, he said: "The walk will commence on Saturday, March 15, and we will be walking between 10 and 15 miles a day for nine days in temperatures around 30 to 35 degrees! "Martin James and Amanda Owen, of the Martin James Health Club in Kilgetty, will be designing a special training programme in preparation for the gruelling walk. "The programme has started already and entails daily visits to the Health Club on top of five-mile walks each day." Nick, who is secretary of the Welsh over 50s team, is off to South Africa in January 2008 with the Warwickshire over 50s team. When not touring with the Welsh over 50s, he has made regular guest appearances for the Worcestershire and Warwickshire teams on their overseas tours. He will be paying for his own travelling and accommodation expenses for the trip to China, but would welcome hearing from readers who would like to sponsor his walk. Anyone interesting in sponsoring the walk can contact Nick Evans at his Narberth home by telephoning (01834) 861788. On his return from China, Nick Evans will be willing to give illustrated talks of his experiences to any interested groups. Nick Evans is involved in Pembrokeshire cricketing circles all the year round. He coaches regularly with his colleagues from the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches and is a member of the Pembroke County Cricket Club Executive Committee. He has also played an active role over the years in the development of ladies cricket in Pembrokeshire and Wales and also finds time to run Pembrokeshire's only Cricket Shop at Redstone Road in Narberth.
