QUALITY MARK

The school was pleased to be presented last week with the Quality Mark. In a recent assembly, Mr. Bryn Davies, a field officer for the Basic Skills Agency, presented the plaque to Mr. Des Stone, headteacher.

In his address to the school he praised everyone for the atmosphere he encountered and the children for their singing and order. Mr. Davies and Mrs. Christine Phillips, pastoral advisor, praised both staff and pupils for the efforts made to achieve the Quality Mark, which indicates that the 10 elements of progress in and commitment to the basic skills had been well demonstrated.

Mr. Davies wished the school continued success and progress and thanked them for such a warm welcome. Mr. P. Harris was congratulated for his efforts in co-ordinating the approach.

Also present at the assembly was Mrs. Val Scurlock, pastoral advisor, Rev. A. Chiplin and Mr. Clive Edwards (school governors). Rev. A. Chiplin led the prayers following his vote of thanks to the school, on behalf of the school governing body.

FOOTBALL/NETBALL

The school had a busy period leading up to the half-term with mixed results. The first event entered was the Tenby area schools football and netball tournament and this proved more successful than recent years. The school netball team remained unbeaten until they encountered Tenby Junior School in the final match. Both teams needed a win to claim the shield, which brought about an exciting climax to the competition. In a skilful end-to-end match, Tenby overcame a very determined Narberth team to win by 4-2 giving them a one-point lead in the league table.

The situation was as exciting on the football pitch with the school team winning all but one of their games. In the second match they were beaten by Sageston and as a result had to win their match against Tenby in the final game of the afternoon to win the shield. The end-to-end struggle on the large pitch was an energy-sapping occasion for both teams and the result was settled with one goal scored by Joshua Layzell for Narberth.

This tournament was followed by the Narberth Area tournament held at St. Aidans. Both teams hoped to continue their success, but this was not to be as both the football and netball A teams were beaten in their respective finals. The netball team came up against a strong, well-organised St. Aidans team and lost in the final by six goals to one.

On the football pitch, Narberth lost the first and last game of the day, both to a very skilful and determined Templeton team. While, in the first game, it was evident that the Narberth team had not warmed up, the final proved completely different in an exciting encounter, which was won by a golden goal for Templeton in extra-time.

Football and netball continued on Monday, May 21, when the schools travelled to Pembroke to face Monkton Priory School in the Pembrokeshire's schools knockout cup.

Both teams had successfully come through three rounds so the standard of the game was high. After conceding two early goals, Narberth gained in confidence as they scored a goal of their own. Monkton, however, proved the stronger outfit and won this tussle by four goals to two.

The B team also lost 1-0, while there were mixed fortunes on the netball court. The A team lost by 13 goals to five, while the B team returned as the only winners, scoring seven to Monkton's one.

MILLENNIUM

VISIT

Dosbarth 4 and 5 enjoyed a visit to the Millennium Stadium on the Wednesday before half-term. As well as a tour of the stadium, they were treated to a poetry workshop by Myrddin ap Dafydd, and everyone returned full of enthusiasm and excitement following their experience.

FAMILY FUN DAY

A group of 11 pupils thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated a family Fun Day held at Withybush on May 16. They were taken by staff and helpers and had been busy preparing collages and cakes to enter the various competitions.

While all were commended for their entries the following gained first place rosettes: Fergus Rosie (gingerbread man); Melissa Craven (decorated cakes); James Francis (three small cakes); Ashley Stupple (collage); Aaron John (Rice Krispy cakes); Class 2 (group collage).

Following the half-term break, senior pupils travelled to Pembroke Dock for a week at the Watersports Centre.

The school is preparing for the annual sports on the Town Moor on Thursday, June 14, and seven pupils form part of the Area Swimming Squad to compete in the County Finals.

RUGBY

The half-term was rounded off when, on Friday morning, three Llanelli Rugby Club members, led by Mr. Bob Fisher, gave a lively coaching session to a group of 20 Year 5 boys and girls. Ball handling skills, confidence and balance visibly improved as the session progressed and everyone enjoyed the morning.
