Congratulations to Bex Lees-Griffiths, of Tenby, who recently gained a high honours (distinction) in her grade 5 pop vocals exam.
With top marks in the musical knowledge and aural tests, the Year 10 student at Greenhill School lost just five marks in her programme, which included Big Spender, Breathless (The Corrs) and Killing Me Softly.
The singer will continue her practical and pop theory studies with grades 6-8, gaining UCAS points for her university application in three years' time.
Bex, who is a private pupil of Helen Standing BA (hons) Dip Mus, CT ABRSM, of Pentlepoir, has previously passed classical singing and piano grades with ABRSM, but she is the first pupil entered by Miss Standing for the London College of Music Pop Vocals exams, awarded by Thames Valley University. The board also offer musical theatre exams, for which other pupils are preparing.
In last term's ABRSM exams, the following pupils were successful: Mary Sines - piano grade 1 (merit), Tom Kidney - viola grade 3 and Lydia Rooke - violin grade 2.
To encourage improved musical knowledge and practice between exams, Helen has developed a new scheme of awards for her pupils. Ben Turner (clarinet), David Clark (piano), and violin students Ffion Davies, Hanna Thomas and Beccy Jones attained the Bronze Award for Scales last term. Well done to all who worked so hard!
