Narberth town councillors have called time for licensee, Clr. Mrs. Sue Rees, to serve as the town's next Mayor.

Landlady of the Ivy Bush Inn, High Street, Clr. Mrs. Rees was officially installed as First Citizen at the town council's annual general meeting on Tuesday night.

Her appointment was proposed by outgoing Mayor, Clr. Eric Feetham, and unanimously supported by councillors.

Although she has spent the last 12 months as Clr. Feetham's deputy, Clr. Mrs. Rees, who is married to John, is no stranger to the top job, as she served as Mayor two years ago in 2001.

As well as her involvements with the council, Clr. Mrs. Rees, is a member of the town's Pubwatch scheme, LVA, Chamber of Trade and Civic Week committee.

Clr. Mrs. Rees appointed her husband as her consort and proposed Clr. Henry Langen for the post of Deputy Mayor.

However, before handing over the Mayor's chain, Clr. Feetham reflected on his year in office and paid tribute to all the organisations and individuals who had helped him enjoy the last 12 months.

Over the year, Clr. Feetham said he had attended many functions and events, including the Queen's Jubilee celebrations in the town, Civic Week, Winter Carnival and Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon, and had always received a warm welcome wherever he went.

He congratulated all the sports teams in the area on their successes and wished Narberth rugby team well for their crucial league match this weekend.

As well as thanking his deputy, Clr. Mrs. Sue Rees, and town clerk, Mrs. Caroline Coaker, for all their hard work, he thanked his wife, Doris, and fellow councillors for their support.

He also thanked the Observer for their "first class" reporting, Mrs. Edna Davies, staff and pupils at Narberth CP School for their support and Chris Coaker and staff at Sunnybank who do a "wonderful job under difficult circumstances."

Despite the many high points, Clr. Feetham reported a "few disappointments," including the Narberth in Bloom competition and the provision of a car park at the De Rutzen, which he would still work to achieve.

In accepting the chain of office, Clr. Mrs. Rees thanked her fellow councillors for putting their confidence in her again and said she hoped that they would give her their full support in the months ahead.

Councillors also agreed at their meeting that the Mayor's allowance remain at £1,000.
