'We are open for business'. That's the message from shopkeepers in Narberth this week who are trading as usual despite the major roadworks in the town.

The three-week re-surfacing scheme began in High Street on Monday and already members of the town's chamber of trade are reporting a downturn in business.

"As anticipated there has been a substantial reduction in both footfalls and takings within the town already," said chamber secretary, Gordon Barry, yesterday (Thursday). "And that's after less than a full week.

"This has been exacerbated by the continuing confusion with temporary road signage not always reflecting what currently is happening within the town. "Many of our customers have made long detours, only to find that the town centre roads were open to traffic! "However, as we become more familiar with the project requirements, so it should become easier to help with information." The Chamber of Trade would like to thank their customers for having the patience and fortitude to support the town during this period of disruption. They also wish to remind businesses to whenever possible not park in the one-hour street parking spots, but to leave them vacant for their customers! The chamber understands that no work will be carried out during the weekends.

"We are and will remain 'open for business'," added Mr. Barry.
