Members of the Community Church, Narberth, have for several years been raising money to build and equip a clinic in the Kande area of Malawi, Africa.
Graham and Ruth Swaffield were appalled at the lack of basic medical services when they visited the area in 2003. They came back and started to raise money for a proper clinic to be built and equipped. In 2007 they saw the foundations laid.
After joining the Community Church in 2008, other members, several being trades people, joined the effort. In 2011, the building was complete, with electricity and pure clean water; this water was also supplied to the local village.
Many local businesses have helped by supplying materials for the build, especially for the water purification system.
At the moment they are collecting medical equipment for transport to the clinic so that it can be registered with the Malawi government and start serving the people. A local board of management is in place as are the medical staff.
A fundraising event has been arranged, with the internationally known Haverfordwest Choir giving a concert on January 28, at 7,30 pm, at Maenclochog Village Hall. Tickets are available for £5 from Graham and Ruth on 01994 419683.
