President Derek Williams welcomed guest speaker Anthea Goddard to the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland recently.

Anthea, president-elect of the Rotary Club of Cardigan, trained as a dispensing optician, skills which have become an asset not just to patients with eye problems in the UK, but now on the continents of Africa and India, as well as countries in the Eastern bloc.

Over the years, Anthea and her fellow professionals have travelled to many countries abroad where clinics are set up to help the local people who have eye problems. Many of the patients are just short-sighted and are instantly helped by the provision of appropriate spectacles.

For many years, Rotarians in the UK have collected surplus spectacles, which are sent to a central station at Crawley to be mended, overhauled and refurbished, before being distributed to countries all over the world.

Whilst abroad, Anthea and her fellow volunteers put their skills to great effect by, not only fitting the spectacles, but by training the local people to undertake simple tasks which result in the immediate improvement in the quality of life for so many.

If you have any surplus spectacles, please contact your local Rotary Club or optician. By so doing you can make an enormous difference to someone living in some far off country.
