Pembrokeshire College's Marine Technology Centre (MITEC), based at the Docks in Milford Haven is having an Open Day during Pembrokeshire Fish Week on Saturday, June 23, from 10 am until 4 pm. You can find out what it's like being a student working on real projects constructing seaworthy craft at this specialist marine centre or an adult learner on one of our community courses. There will be an opportunity to see students' work, tour the boat building, marine engineering and woodwork workshops, check out the IT suites and chat to staff about part-time and full-time courses starting in September. At the open day, you can view the recently acquired college boat - a 25-foot cruiser racer - and the refit work involving both boatbuilding and marine engineering students that will see the boat being shortly launched and berthed in Milford Marina. Also on display and nearing completion is our latest traditional wooden boat project - a twenty foot carvel planked ship's boat - which not only has four oar ports, but also has the option of a standing lugg sail. It is anticipated this will be presented to the JFK Trust in late July and will sit proudly on the deck of the tall ship Dunbrody. You can also see display boards of students gaining valuable work experience on the tall ship Dunbrody which lies alongside the quay wall in New Ross, Ireland. Thanks to European funding, boatbuilding and marine engineering students have all had the opportunity to spend a week working alongside other craftsmen carrying out various maintenance work on board the ship.
