Tenby VC Infants School's recent inspection stated that the school provides its pupils with a good quality of education in a loving and civilized environment, promoting successfully the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Standards of Achievement in English are very good in Key Stage 1. The standards in speaking, listening, reading and writing are very good. In mathematics, standards are very good in Key Stage 1, with pupils making very good progress in the numeracy skills. Standards in science are good in Key Stage 1.
Standards in the Under Fives Department are good and children make good progress towards the desirable learning outcomes.
The National Curriculum standards are above the national figures, with the school achieving good standards which are in line with the top 25 per cent of similar schools in Wales. Lessons observed were 83 per cent good, 17 per cent satisfactory. No unsatisfactory standards were observed.
Standards of achievement in Key Stage 1 were as follows:
English - very good; maths - very good; science - good; Welsh second language - good; Welsh first language - good; DT - good; ICT - good; history - good; geography - good; art - good; music - good; physical education - good; religious education - good; special needs - very good (with some outstanding features).
Leadership and management - very good; links with industry - satisfactory; PSHE - very good.
The school development plan is a good quality working document: its priorities are clear and appropriate to the needs of the school. The headteacher and governors take care that the school obtains the best value for money for its spending decisions and there are regular audits of its financial position.
The school accommodation is very good, classrooms are very colourfully decorated and this creates a rich inviting, learning environment which celebrates pupils' works and efforts.
The school has a very good supply of well chosen and stimulating resources. New hardware and software for ICT have made a positive impact upon pupils' standards of achievements. Very good links have been forged with the neighbouring Junior School and this has a direct impact upon pupils' standards in information technology.
The key issues identified in the last Inspection report have been very well addressed. In order to maintain the good standard achieved, and to further enhance the quality of education provided, the school needs to:
1. Continue and extend the existing procedures for monitoring standards across the curriculum, paying particular attention to the foundation subjects of the National Curriculum as identified in the SDP.
2. Further develop the whole-school assessment procedure to ensure that:
a) marking is consistent; b) reports lay a greater emphasis on improving pupils' performance; c) systems are developed to involve pupils more closely in the assessment of their own work and progress they make.
All staff and governors of Tenby VC Infants School would like to thank Mrs. Newman and her team of inspectors for the professional, competent and courteous way in which the inspection was conducted.
