An Amroth man who twice armed himself with a knife before finally stabbing his victim in the neck has been jailed for 18 months.

Daniel Brearley, aged 22, who claimed to have drunk 15 pints of lager before becoming violent, admitted wounding, having a bladed article in a public place and possessing an offensive weapon.

David Lindsey, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court how an argument broke out between Brearley and a group of men playing pool at the Temple Bar Inn, Amroth, in November last year.

At one stage, Brearley picked up a steak knife and pointed it at Simon Williams's stomach, saying: "I'll have you or any of your friends any day of the week."

Robert Goldsworthy intervened and he, too, was threated with the knife.

Brearley put down the weapon and Mr. Goldsworthy offered to fight him 'one on one' outside.

Mr. Lindsey said the group made their way outside, but at some point Brearley went into his flat next door to the pub and took hold of a small kitchen knife.

He then returned to the scene and stabbed Mr. Goldsworthy in the neck.

Mr. Lindsey said, fortunately, the wound was not serious and Mr. Goldsworthy was treated by ambulance staff.

Police later recovered the kitchen knife and arrested Brearley.

After questioning, Brearley, a plasterer, was released on police bail, but absconded until he was re-arrested in Birmingham several months later.

Brearley claimed he had been the victim of an assault by Mr. Goldsworthy and that he had armed himself with the kitchen knife to protect himself.

The judge, Mr. Recorder Peter Rouch, said Brearley appeared to be quick to resort to using a knife.

"A wound to the neck could have had absolutely frightening and tragic results," he added.
