Plans to ‘raise flags’ for Long Course Weekend winners in Tenby have been considered by local councillors.

The organiser of the sporting event, Matthew Evans from Activity Wales, recently put to town councillors his hopes to create a ‘legacy’ for winning athletes, by displaying the flags of their nations somewhere in Tenby for the year, alongside the Pembrokeshire banner.

The event, which lasts for three days in mid-July in Tenby and its surrounding area, accommodates some of the best triathlon talent in the UK and from around the world.

The course consists of a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, finishing with a 26.2 mile run, and since its inception in 2010, more than 20,000 competitors have attempted the punishing route.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, the Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said that the only permanent place that could prove practical was the location where the current flags were displayed along the town walls

Both Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown and Clr. Tony Brown suggested having a presentation ceremony in the area by St. Mary’s Church on Tudor Square, where the Christmas tree was displayed annually, and then transferring the flags to be raised on the town walls later on.
