The way that football is organised within Pembrokeshire polarises opinion like politics, yet nobody can deny this season has been one of the most exciting on record.
Even though we are nearing the business end of the season, nothing has really been cast in stone. Kilgetty could still be relegated from Division One, while St. Clears, after leading Division Three for the majority of the season, could still find themselves playing in the same category next year, while Narberth Seconds could yet be relegated if the footballing gods are against them.
Narberth firsts, meanwhile, are safe following their 5-2 defeat away at Hakin. Although it wouldn't have made them happy, they do have the consolation of knowing this year's league champions beat them. Richie Adams with a penalty and Ade Jones scored the goals for the Bluebirds
Kilgetty travelled to Merlins Bridge and won an absorbing clash 3-2. Leading 2-1 at the break thanks to two goals by Adam Johns, last season's champions drew level mid-way through the second half as the visitors lost their shape and discipline.
The Wizards had a chance to win it with a penalty, but Peter Thomas hoofed it over the bar, much to Kilgetty's relief, although that was paled into comparison with the rapturous scenes that were evident when Paul Hodge blasted one into the top righ- hand corner of the net with five minutes remaining.
"It was a close game and a bit heart-stopping for us," said manager Andrew Cope. "Considering we made changes from mid-week, it was an excellent performance. We still need six points to make it safe, but hopefully it will all have been put to bed come next weekend."
Despite already being crowned champions, Tenby were in no mood to surrender their winning habit away at Letterston and came away from that tricky place with a 3-0 win to their name.
A goal apiece from Ricky Morgan and Dean Rossiter in the first half followed by an excellent effort by Callum Proctor in the second secured the victory for Mike Lewis's side, who was more than pleased with the result.
"It was a good result. It's not an easy place to play and the boys thoroughly deserved the win. It's been a long season and the boys deserve all the credit they can get. They trained hard in pre-season and all that hard work has paid off."
Pendine lost an exciting game against Haverfordwest Cricket Club 4-3 despite going into the break 3-0 up. A flurry of first half goals by Luke Ormond, Ricky Hunt and Paul Langdon gave the Seagulls an excellent advantage heading into the second period, but for some unexplained reason they went to sleep and allowed the visitors in to score four and take the points on offer.
"It was an excellent game," said Terence Langdon. "It was very exciting and we had chances to win it ,but didn't take them. I think a bit of tiredness crept in, especially in the second half, but it was a good game nonetheless."
Meanwhile, at Saundersfoot, the Sports won 2-1 against Johnston.
St. Florence had an excellent result away at Lawrenny, winning 4-1. The visitors led 1-0 at the break thanks to a goal by Scott Smith and dominated to such an extent they went 4-0 in the second after John Mackie, Colin Bately and Luke Askew all scored.
Lawrenny responded with a goal by Phil Cole, but it was too little too late for them on the day.
St. Clears are still second in the third division following their 3-0 win away at Monkton Swifts, with all goals coming in the first half of play. Had the Saints not lost their two matches against Hundleton, they would have been crowned champions already, but with Hakin Seconds still in the mix, promotion is not guaranteed.
The visitors went ahead thanks to a Gareth Griffiths goal, followed by goals by Eddie Wiggins and Sam Thomas.
Narberth Seconds have ended their quota of matches for the season and are hoping results go their way after losing 4-0 at home to Pennar Robins.
"It's mathematically possible we could still go down," said manager Steve Jones. "We played really poorly in this game, which was very disappointing after playing so well recently, so hopefully it won't happen. It wouldn't be good for the club if we did."
Had they beaten Lamphey mid-week instead of drawing the match, they would have been safe, but those dropped two points may come back to haunt them.
In all probability they will remain a third division outfit next season, but they will be sweating it out in the comfort of their own homes while other teams compete to see who stays up and who goes down.
A goal by Peter Rattenbury was not enough for Saundersfoot Seconds to avoid defeat away at Goodwick United as they finally lost 2-1 in Division Four, while Kilgetty lost 2-0 at home against Herbrandston.
Meanwhile, in Division Five, St. Clears' Seconds drew 2-2 at home with Lawrenny thanks to goals by Keri Phillips and Ollie Thomas, with Conrad Mandiki and Chris Beffreplying for the visitors, while Pendine's reserves lost 9-1 away at West Dragons.
