While the majority of Pembrokeshire's football clubs were doing battle in league football over the weekend, Kilgetty were forced to play their senior cup clash a week later than scheduled due to their commitments in the West Wales competition; and it appears this week off for playing teams from within the shire didn't do them any harm after they beat Milford Athletic 2-1.
The victory guaranteed Andrew Cope's team a passage into the next round of the blue riband event for local soccer and confirmed the maturity of his team as they battled not only against worthy opponents, but unfavourable conditions too.
Kilgetty play a fast, open, attractive brand of football and the strong wind, driving rain and heavy field all conspired against them doing this against the Athletic, especially at home where the drainage is by no means helpful.
Still, Cope was happy with the way his team played.
"Soft pitches and strong winds don't help us at all, but we overcame that to win the game against a strong team. It was by no means our best performance, but we did enough to win and that's pleasing."
A dull first half resulted in the sides going into the break tied at 0-0, but an early goal in the second half by Duane Reynolds gave the home team the advantage.
The visitors equalised not long after and given the amount of chances that Kilgetty failed to take, it would have been no surprise to see the game going into extra-time, but a Nick Cope goal from the edge of the box with around five minutes to go sealed the win which was deserving of the home side given their dominance in the second half of the game.
Back to league action and Narberth gave a good account of themselves in the second half of their game at home against Monkton Swifts, but an early onslaught by the visitors in the first half put paid to any comebacks and they went down 5-2.
The Swifts were 3-0 up at the break as they ran Narberth ragged and when the fourth went in early in the second half the writing really was on the wall. The Bluebirds did offer some semblance of a comeback when Morgan Preece scored and a period of dominance followed, but another goal by the visitors put paid to this.
However, the Bluebirds did have a late consolation when the Swifts scored for them late in the game.
"Those two early goals rocked us," admitted manager Nigel Thomas. "We improved in the second half, but by then the damage had been done. They were better organised than us to be fair and it shows in the result."
Elsewhere in the division, Manorbier United put their early season woes behind them as they accounted for Pembroke Boro at home winning 3-1.
An early goal by James Hall resulted in the home side going into the break 1-0 up, before the Boro responded with one of their own, but another Hall special, together with an Ashley Murdock score, helped secure three valuable points for the homesters.
It wasn't such a good day for Pendine, however, as they went down 3-1 at home against Johnston. The defeat was their fifth of the season and with only one win from six games played, they are one place off the bottom and unless their form improves dramatically, a relegation dogfight could be on the cards.
Straight on the back of a mammoth win the week before against Manorbier United, Saundersfoot Sports would have been confident of coming away from Prendergast Villa with a win under their belts.
As it happens, they had to be content with a 2-2 draw, although player/manager Danny Caine says the second-placed team were lucky to get a point from the game.
"We played well. It was an even game I suppose, but we did shade it and deserved all three points. You have to remember they beat us 6-0 a few weeks ago, so to come away with a point is satisfying, especially considering the way we played."
The home team took the lead midway through the first half, but the Sports equalised just before the break when Peter Bailey headed the ball in following an excellent build-up.
The goal obviously gave the visitors confidence as they were the first to score in the second half when Caine latched on to a poor clearance by the home team skipper to drill the ball home from 20 yards.
When a win looked likely, the Villa showed their ability with a well-taken goal with about 15 minutes to go and, although the Sports finished well, no further goals were forthcoming and a share of the points was all they had to show for their efforts.
In Division Three, St. Florence went down 3-1 away at Broad Haven; James Thomas scoring the goal for the visitors, but St. Clears continued their fine form this campaign with a comfortable 3-1 win at home against Lamphey.
Sharp shooter Eddie Wiggins was at it against for the home team by scoring a goal in each half, the first via the penalty spot after he was felled in the box, the other early in the second half, but it was Andrew McCabe who scored first, after he capitalised on some early pressure to lob Jason Oatley with a well-taken goal.
The Saints didn't have it their own way, though, as Mike Davies did put one away for them, but in truth there was only the one team in it and that was the league leaders.
Lawrenny began well against Hakin United, but eventually went down 4-1 at home against Hakin United's second team.
"We started off well," said Neil Jolly. "But we faded in the second and gifted them a couple of goals. We did create a few chances and had we taken them it would have been different and, although we may not have won, at least the scoreline would have reflected the game, as the final result didn't do our boys justice."
Hakin score two early goals against the run of play, but Lawrenny finally got what they deserved when Dean Morris put one away. Unfortunately, this was negated when Hakin scored just before the break.
Lawrenny performed better in the second and created more, but didn't put them away, unlike Hakin who scored one more before the final whistle blew.
Narberth Seconds continue to find life tough in the third division and were forced to field half a team with players aged 45 and over in their match against Monkton Swifts.
While experience can count for a lot in local football, there is no substitute for pace and the Swifts constantly looked threatening on the break and it was no surprise to see them 4-0 up at the break.
However, they appeared to tire in the second and allowed Narberth back in after the fifth went in.
Nathan Evans nipped in with a brace, while Chris O'Connell scored the third and, although more chances came, they went begging as the final touch just let Narberth down.
In Division Four, Carew Seconds tied 1-1 with their counterparts from St. Ishmaels, with Wayne Cannon grabbing the home team's goal, while Kilgetty lost 4-1 away at Milford Athletic.
Saundersfoot beat Camrose 5-1, with Tom Spencer and Grant Hardy both grabbing two goals apiece, before Jamie Morgan nipped in with one of his own and in Division Five, Tenby beat Lawrenny 4-0, with manager Alun Morgan declaring it a really good performance.
"I'm really pleased. We did have a strong side out, but they dominated from the start and deserved the win. We could have scored more to be honest, but I can't complain we won and that's all that matters. Hopefully we'll climb the table now."
