How many of us realise that some of our everyday superstitions go right back to Tudor times and many are linked to food and the kitchen? We talk of the 'Evil Eye' and still throw spilled salt over our left shoulder to avoid bad luck.

There are also many superstitions which are no longer in use - why should you avoid throwing eggshells into the fire or only stir the pot with your right hand?

"It's a fascinating subject and we're looking forward to revealing more with a fun quiz," said Angela Jones, manager of the National Trust's Tudor Merchant's House in Tenby.

"Our house stewards and volunteers are also mines of information about life in Tudor times and how the merchant and his family would have spent their days."

The free quiz will be available for half-term week between 11 am and 4.30 pm from Sunday, October 27 to Sunday, November 2, when the house will be open every day. Visitors will also be able to help lay the high table for the midday meal and for a small charge, make a pomander to take home.
