It's a new year and a new chapter for Pembrokeshire's libraries. Three of the county's main libraries are now open at lunchtime for the first time. From last Monday (January 9) Fishguard, Milford Haven and Tenby opened their doors to book lovers between 1 pm and 2 pm. The move aims to encourage people, who might not otherwise be able to visit, into their local libraries. Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for sports leisure, tourism and cultural services, said the new hours were part of the council's policy to bring its libraries up to date. "Modern libraries are no longer the traditional, fusty backwaters of old. They are bright welcoming places offering residents a lot more than just books to borrow," he said. "You can take out videos, audio books on CD and cassette and even access the internet free. We want people to come in and use our libraries more." Libraries at Haverfordwest and Pembroke Dock are already open during lunchtime. Tenby Library is open from 9.30 am to 5 pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and from 9.30 am to 6 pm on Tuesday. Saturday opening hours are 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.
