This competition, traditionally played on the Friday closest to the longest day of the year, was played last Friday, July 1. It had been postponed from it's original date on June 17 due to inclement weather and also that many lady members were away at Aberystwyth playing in the Welsh Ladies Team Championship.

The Sam Ackermann Trophy was originally presented in 1983 by his family in memory of Mr. S. W. (Sam) Ackermann, club captain in 1972/73. This competition, which unusually has a draw for partners, encourages players to mix together. On this occasion there were 12 pairs competing for the statue trophy and the opportunity for their names to be emblazoned on the honours board.

In fifth place were Sarah Waring and Dave Hancock with 34 points. Fourth place went to Fair Ball and Roger Schooling, also with 34 points. In third spot were lady captain Anita Davies and David T. Morgan with 37 points (£4 each). Second place went to Georgina Ormond and Steve Cole, also with 37 points, but a better back nine (£6 each). The winners were Laura McQueen and Rob Hall with an excellent 43 points (£10 each).

Surprisingly, there were no twos on the day, despite the course being in magnificent condition and the benign weather. Therefore, four bag draws were made and these were won by Georgina Ormond and Steve Cole, Fair Ball and Roger Schooling, Barbara and Glyn Williams, Heather K. Morgan and Steve Sutcliffe (£3 each).

Finally, it would be remiss not to offer my thanks to a number of people, i.e. Penny Cope, David Lamb, Nigel Rimell and Dave Hancock for stepping in to make up the numbers at short notice. Very short in Dave's case! Thanks also to the pro shop for sorting out the cards and to Steve and his team for the after-match catering.

All in all, this was a very enjoyable evening, played in bright sunshine, followed by a convivial social gathering.

The next mixed event is another 'Major', the Usher Cup on Sunday, July 17. The entry details and sheet are on the Mixed noticeboard.
