Tenby Town Crier, John Thomas, used his voice to full effect when he competed in the European Town Criers competition at the weekend.

One of 50 criers taking part in the event, John was delighted to reach the final of the prestigious competition staged at Newton Abbot.

As well as participants from all corners of the United Kingdom, there were competitors attending from the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland.

After an introductory cry about their home towns, the second heat saw participants cry about the HM The Queen's 50-year reign, before the 12 finalists were announced.

John was delighted to be chosen for the last stage of the competition, and after a keenly contested affair, Hans Van Laethem from Belgium was voted the winner.

Current national champion, Alistair Chisholm, of Dorchester, won second place, while Trevor Heeks, of Trowbridge, who won Tenby's recent Town Crier competition, came third.

Along with his fellow competitors, John took part in a colourful parade through the town and also visited various places of interest around Newton Abbot in between the various stages of the competition.
