Fr. Paul led the Eucharist services in the parishes on Pentecost Sunday, June 4. The readings were Acts 2. vv 1-21, Romans 8. vv 22-27. The Gospel reading was John 15. vv 26-27 and 16. vv 4-15, where we read of the work of the Holy Spirit.
For his sermon, Fr. Paul highlighted words from verse 13 of the Gospel of John, chapter 16, 'When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth'. In explaining the reading, Fr. Paul compared the Holy Spirit to the referee controlling an important football match, guiding the players to perform right from wrong. He said that the Holy Spirit will move us out of complacency and guide us to love our God and our neighbours.
At the end of the service, Fr. Paul was proud to show the congregation the lovely coloured flags, showing tongues of fire, which had been made by the children in the Sunday School. These carried the words 'Holy Spirit we welcome You,' and the closing prayer, beautifully read by Emma June, reflected this, on this day of the church's birthday. Going out of church we all had a piece of luscious sponge cake to celebrate.
Evensong in Jeffreyston church was led by Fr. Paul. The Old Testament reading was Isaiah 11. vv 1-9 and from the New Testament it was the Gospel of the day. In his sermon, Fr. Paul expanded on the teaching from John 15 and 16. He referenced the book of the Prophet Joel, chapter 2, verses 28 - end.
