Ways of providing further information on the road restrictions that take place during the Ironman Wales event to people inside and outside of the area have been called for.

Discussing the matter at Tuesday night's meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. Will Rossiter said he agreed with certain points in correspondence that came before councillors from Tenby Civic Society, who had written to Pembrokeshire County Council following the event to say that they were strong supporters of Ironman and similar events in Tenby, but believed that it would benefit the county more if there was clearer and more consistent information on traffic restrictions for residents and visitors alike provided prior to the event.

"The Civic Society very much welcomes these events, but regrettably there is a loss of amenity to residents and losses to some businesses, but this is a price that we have to pay for the benefits of having increased visitor numbers at the end of the season and an enhanced profile for Tenby," wrote Mr. Douglas Fraser of the Civic Society.

"There is just one aspect of the organisation of these events which from our observation requires improvement, and that is in the quality and quantity of advance information given.

"At the last Ironman, the PCC website map of road closures was confusingly colour-keyed and there were some time discrepancies between that and the Ironman literature.

"On a previous occasion, road closures were put in place over an hour before the advertised time.

"For those people who need to be able to move in or out of Tenby and the neighbouring areas on the day of the event, it is essential to have accurate and timely information so that they can plan their journey," continued Mr. Fraser, who claimed that this lack of information also applied outside the area.

"We are not aware of much publicity elsewhere in the UK, but the knowledge that Tenby is used for major triathlon and similar events must make it more attractive to those who enjoy their sport, as spectators or participants.

"Conversely, we have encountered visitors who simply wanted a day at the seaside and were not aware of what was happening, being disillusioned with Tenby because they encountered road closures or were blocked in," added Mr. Fraser.

Discussing the letter, Clr. Will Rossiter agreed with the points about a lack of information being provided to visitors.

"The organisers need to find better ways of propagating the event outside of the area," he told his fellow councillors.

Clr. Trevor Hallett felt the organisers did a great job overall and he was sure that they would be able to tweak any problems that cropped up, while Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter said that it was "short-sighted" of businesses who chose to stay closed because of the road restrictions.

The town clerk told councillors that the county council's street care manager, Marc Owen, usually held a meeting after the event, where the town council could put forward any points following this year's Ironman.
