Sir,
Tenby Civic Society takes great pleasure in noting that these shop front plans have been amended and the design improved in several respects. The society compliments both the National Park planners and Clinton Cards on agreeing suitable changes quickly - no doubt Christmas sales were in prospect!
We hope our new arrival in the High Street will be successful and become so at home there that the next refit of the shop front sets new standards in tasteful design sensitive to the character of High Street and Tudor Square.
Hopefully, before then, their near neighbour, Woolworths, will also have upgraded the present 'lavatory tile' part of their shop front to be more in character with the buildings above and around it.
After all, Woolworths have, with simple coats of paint (and the help of the National Park planners) recently transformed the rear of their building overlooking the harbour from looking like Tenby Jail almost into a 'pastel palace', complementing the charming crescent of buildings encasing the harbour.
Many local business in Tenby will feel that they have both gone to more bother and been more successful in keeping their shop fronts in character with their buildings and setting than national names in the retail world. There are hopeful signs that the national chains may catch up, with a bit of pushing!
Harry Gardiner,
Acting Secretary,
Tenby Civic Society,
7 The Glebe,
Tenby.
