A new charity which has been set up to safeguard the future of music at Greenhill School is appealing for help to get off the ground.

The SPAG (Supporters of Performing Arts at Greenhill) charity was set up after threats were made to cut music teaching at the Tenby comprehensive earlier this year.

But officers and supporters are needed to make the charity a success.

South Pembrokeshire AM Angela Burns has agreed to be the charity's patron and an open evening is being held at the school on Monday to get the charity up and running.

"Music is the jewel in Greenhill's crown and I am proud to be patron of the new charity," said Mrs. Burns.

"The funding threat earlier this year focussed everybody's minds on the quality of music at the school and its importance.  We now need to consolidate the anger that was felt at the time into a solid action plan to safeguard the future of all performing arts at the school," she added.

Greenhill has the largest school orchestra in the UK and recently won two first prizes at the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham.

It was previously supported by SOGO (Supporters of Greenhill Orchestra) who raised £10,000 last year to help with expenses such as travelling costs.

It was decided to set up an official charity to support all music and performing arts at the school after the funding threat in March.

SOGO chairman Angela Roberts said: "We understand that there's going to be further cuts next year and before anything blows up, we need to be on stable ground.

"Anyone is welcome along to support us - whether you are a parent of children at the school or a grandparent like me, or just a music lover."

The SPAG meeting takes place at Greenhill School at 7 pm on October 19 at the school's music department. All are welcome to attend.
