An AM has written to the Health Minister after concerns have been raised about the services available on the Welsh NHS in Tenby, with one councillor describing Tenby's community as 'under siege' because of the withdrawal of services. The Welsh Government has replied to Plaid Cymru AM Simon Thomas with assurances regarding health services available in Tenby. Mid and West AM Simon Thomas for the Party of Wales said: "I raised the issue in the Senedd before the summer with the Health Minister. People in Tenby are quite rightly concerned about the future of Welsh NHS services in the area. "I wanted clarity for the local community so I wrote to the Health Minister. The staffing challenge faced because of the departure of some GPs in Tenby shows why Plaid Cymru's policy of recruiting 1,000 extra doctors is important for the future of services locally. "The proposal to close Tenby Minor Injuries Unit was agreed locally, but subject to certain conditions. I don't believe that these conditions have been met but no one seems to be taking responsibility for this". Pembrokeshire County Councillor Jon Preston added: "The degradation of services is unacceptable and cannot be sustained. "I have worked closely with the South East Pembrokeshire Community Health Network over the last two years and we as a community feel under siege with services being withdrawn to a critical level. "We have repeatedly been given false assurances that medical provision would be provided by a new model prior to the withdrawal of minor injuries services at Tenby. "Individuals within the health board need to be accountable and expect a consequence if they do not comply with assurances given to the people of Pembrokeshire." In his reply to Party of Wales AM Simon Thomas, the Health Minister outlines the summer services available. This summer the Red Cross will be in operation on weekdays 2- 6 pm and 10 am - 6 pm on weekends and bank holidays for the period of July 19 - September 7. Hywel Dda University Health Board will pilot a pharmacy 'triage and treat' service in Tenby and Saundersfoot over the same period. The Minister states he is aware that the surgery in Tenby is currently facing a staffing challenge due to the departure of some GPs. The Health Minister has been assured the health board is look to recruit GPs to deal with the shortage. Additional GP locum cover will be available this month and a nurse practitioner has been employed until the end of August 2014 to support the GPs.
