A happy end to a sad tale this week, as beautiful Jenday Conure 'Tickle' was welcomed to Folly Farm, Begelly, after a life of neglect.

The spectacular South American parrot had spent life alone in a small cage, constantly covered to keep him quiet. He had never been outside, and was unfamiliar with human company. Great boredom and distress caused him to pluck his feathers out. Only when taken in by kindhearted bird-specialist Al Francis, in St. Davids, did Tickle's vibrant plumage return- along with a personality to match.

Al and his family provided 18 months of one-to- one care with Tickle to raise his confidence. He stated: " I was approached to rehabilitate Tickle after he was rescued. I'm used to raising rescued birds, having achieved many successful rehabilitations in the past. But, Tickle is a particular favourite. It took a long time to gain his trust, but now he enjoys human company and likes to be tickled. If you stop, he says 'tickle' so you do it again - hence his name."

Al has now passed Tickle on to Folly Farm, believing it an ideal home for such a funny, friendly bird. Tickle is currently in Folly Farm's pet centre, and after slowly settling in will eventually be moved to a large outdoor aviary. Staff are even hoping to find a mate for him!

According to Kara Williams, pet centre supervisor: "Tickle is absolutely gorgeous and we're all extremely fond of him. He's a wonderful, friendly character and it's very sad that it had to take Al 18 months to regain this."

Kara added: "I would strongly urge anyone thinking of getting an exotic pet to think very carefully. Jenday Conures, like all animals, have very specific needs which should be thoroughly researched before considering the commitment involved in keeping one as a pet. Sadly, many animals suffer because their owners are unaware of the huge responsibility involved until it's too late."
