OKLAHOMA

It's Oklahoma time!

Students have been working hard at lunch times and after school to produce a lively, humorous and colourful full-length musical show. Oklahoma is the most popular of all Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals and brings sunshine to Tenby's grey winter skies. The show has a large cast and is accompanied by a section of the splendid Greenhill Orchestra.

Tickets are available from the school at £4.50 and £2.50 (concessions), with a deduction of 50p for pre-purchased tickets. Students can obtain tickets from Room 3 in school at any lunch-time.

WORLD BOOK DAY

This is celebrated, this year, on the same day as that of our patron saint, St. David: March 1. A number of activities have been organised in the library to celebrate the day, amongst these: book quizzes, top 10 books, and we are even hoping to e-mail students at Pembroke School with book reviews from the Reading Rollercoaster. The hope is to focus the attention of as many people as possible onto books and reading. Now that there's some time to think about it, what will you be reading on World Book Day?

GYMNASTICS

A report last week mentioned the boys competing in the Pembrokeshire Schools Gymnastics Festival at Tenby Leisure Centre back in January. This week, the girls that performed so well, are featured.

From Year 8, the following students took part: Kirsty Brace, Stephanie James, Amy John, Penny Young, Jessica Forment, Rebecca Bevans, Phoebe Osborne and Sophie Stanford.

From Year 9 and upwards, the following students participated: Deborah Davies, Sammy Nicholas, Lucy Medwell, Katy John and Katrina Young.

All did really well, particularly as they were competing against gymnasts who train at local clubs, instead of our once weekly Gym Club. Well done to them all!

Following this Gymnastics Festival, Sammy Nicholas and Lucy Medwell entered a Dyfed Schools Gymnastics trial, successfully winning places for Wednesday's event. Results will follow in the next Newyddion Greenhill News.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Last week, the Dyfed Schools Cross Country Championships took place. For this, all top eight students from the Pembrokeshire Schools Cross Country participated. Tom Page, Daniel Colley and David Day-Jones took part from Greenhill. Daniel came in at a highly commendable 20th place, David Day-Jones finished fifth in his race, thus gaining a place in the Dyfed team for the Inter Counties Welsh Championships. Tom, unfortunately, sustained a back injury which also kept him out of last week's British Cross-Country Championship at Nottingham, where he was a favourite to win. Good luck to David!

RUGBY AND FOOTBALL

On Tuesday, February 6, Greenhill played Queen Elizabeth Maridunum School, Carmarthen, in football and rugby.

Year 7 played football, which, following a thrilling encounter, ended a 4-4 draw.

Year 9 also played football. Greenhill were obviously suffering from a post-cup hangover, losing 7-1 to the quality Maridunum side.

Year 8 played rugby, losing 20-18. During the first half, Maridunum dominated proceedings, scoring two early tries and leaving Greenhill to play catch-up rugby from start to finish.

Greenhill played rugby away to Tasker Milward, Haverfordwest, on Thursday, February 8.

Year 7 team lost 40-20. With eight of the normal starting XV away at Gwersyll yr Urdd, Llangrannog, a changed team assembled, giving opportunities to boys who hadn't played a great deal of rugby this year. Taskers proved a strong force in the second half, after a draw at the interval, pulling away with three late tries. However, congratulations must go to the Greenhill side who showed their mettle.

Year 8 lost in a close match, with a final score of 28-25. This game was a tremendous display of open, running rugby, with fabulous tries scored by both teams. Yet again, Greenhill conceded a couple of early tries to their disadvantage. If they manage to alter this trend in future games, success is sure to follow.

Year 10 lost 36-32. After last week's Year 10 basketball success, beating Taskers convincingly in the final, revenge was uppermost in Tasker's mind as they snatched a victory with two late tries.

SKI TRIP

Today, a total of 36 students from Years 9-12 will leave for the Austrian Tyrol, with the PE department, for what promises to be an excellent week's skiing. Good luck to them all.

HALF-TERM

Next week, February 19-23, is half-term week. School re-opens on Monday, February 26.
