"We had good news when the project group of Designed to Deliver published their recommendations on the restructuring of hospitals in West Wales. They have recommended that the four hospitals in West Wales - Withybush, Glangwili, Prince Philip and Bronglais, are not to be reconfigured as part of the all-Wales exercise," said AM Christine Gwyther.

"I said at the outset of the consultation that West Wales might have to be a special case, because of our geography, and the fact that we are so peripheral. This was borne out by the public meetings and by clinicians themselves.

"Now the Designed to Deliver board are saying that with some management changes and with health professionals working closer together across West Wales, we can keep our local hospitals, including Withybush.

"I interpret that as a dignified climbdown by the Designed to Deliver project board, and I hope that the local health board takes the opportunity to dump once and for all the idea of closing either Withybush or Glangwili.

"It has been a tense few months for all of us and I want to take this opportunity to thank the staff at our local hospitals who have continued to work cheerfully throughout what - let's face it - has been an incredibly difficult time.

"I will be at the Pembrokeshire LHB meeting on Thursday. I want to hear the members of the board endorse the recommendations of the project board. But I also want to hear them promise that they will work even more closely with doctors, nurses and other health professionals, as well as with patients and their families, to make sure Pembrokeshire gets the health service it deserves - and that we never again have to face the sort of uncertainty we have seen over the past six months.

"It's time to move on - but with a bit more confidence in our local health service and the dedicated people who work in it."
