Locals are urged to attend a public meeting next week to discuss sea defences for Amroth - and with no funding to carry out any major repairs going forward, it is feared that some properties located in the village will be badly affected or lost completely.

The meeting will be held in Amroth Parish Hall on Monday, January 15, at 7 pm with the Pembrokeshire County Council Coastal Team in attendance.

Amroth Community Council has said that the meeting will see a presentation of plans for ‘managed retreat’ as there is no money to carry out any major repairs to the sea defences going forward, despite Amroth being listed as ‘hold the line’ in the short to medium term, moving to ‘no active intervention’ in the longer term.

A spokesperson for Amroth Community Council stated: “As you know, the road between Mole End and the New Inn is especially vulnerable in the short term.

“Small repairs will be carried out but with the increase in number and power of storms in recent years, the likelihood of it failing completely increases year on year.

“The road currently carries the main water pipe to the East (Waters Edge and beyond) and also the main sewage pipe which transmits all of Summerhill and Amroth’s sewage to the treatment works in New Inn Forest.

“While Amroth and Wisemans Bridge are currently more vulnerable to flooding from the rivers, the sea defences as they are now are aiding the tide in stripping Amroth beach of sand.

“The proposal means that the groynes and sea wall in Amroth will likely be removed sometime in the next 40+ years, allowing the coast to realign; and some properties will be badly affected or lost completely.”

Wisemans Bridge is currently listed as ‘No active intervention’.

Locals are urged to attend the meeting and help spread the word.
