A Pembrokeshire grandfather has launched a fundraising project, aiming to bring grandparents and grandchildren closer together over this period, whilst raising money for Prostate Cymru, Wales’ leading prostate health charity.
‘Fairy doors’ is the brain child of Simon Moffett from Crundale, a member of Prostate Cymru’s Pembrokeshire Friendship Group.
Having been influenced by his own grandchildren, Daf, Llew and Clara, locked down in Cardiff, the initiative encourages grandparents to create miniature replicas of their own front doors and send onto loved ones, to remind them of the warm welcome they represent.
Hand drawn, knitted, wooden, baked or made from scrap, a fairy door can be as intricate or as simple as the creator wishes.
Once completed Simon is asking people to share their creations on the ‘Fairy Doors for Prostate Cymru’ Facebook page and make a donation via Just Giving.
Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru will donate £100 to the winning door and £50 for the second.
Speaking about the project Simon explained: “My daughter suggested I make fairy doors as the children loved them when they saw them during a recent trip to Bluestone and I had the idea to take it one step further and replicate our front door.
“I just used materials and paint lying around in my shed.”
“When the grandchildren opened the packet all they could say was ‘Wow!’
“They have placed it outside in the garden, so they can see it every day and hopefully feel not so far removed from our home in Pembrokeshire.”
Tina Tew, CEO of Prostate Cymru said: “We were all very taken with Simon’s concept and think it is a wonderful idea, not only from the fundraising angle, but the wider meaning that the fairy doors signify. I expect they will bring a little happiness to many children up and down the country.”
“The whole charity sector has been hit hard by recent events and here at Prostate Cymru we are doing our bit to respond and adapt during these unprecedented times.
“More than ever we appreciate the efforts of our external fundraisers, such as Simon, who are championing our cause.
“Fundraisers play a vital role in enabling us to provide the men in Wales with access to the most up to date treatment and care for those suffering with prostate cancer.
“Our support will be needed more than ever in the times ahead.“
