Large queues at petrol stations across the county were envisaged this week as motorists concerned about the current fuel crisis were expected to rush to garage forecourts to fill up their vehicles.
With prices soaring due to the impact Hurricane Katrina has had on oil refineries in the Gulf of Mexico, and with hauliers planning a protest blockade of the M4 today (Friday), a flurry of motorists were expected to be seen lining up at petrol pumps around Pembrokeshire.
However, planned demonstrations at local oil refineries failed to materialise on Wednesday, and filling stations across the county assured drivers not to panic, with the majority reporting no shortage in supplies of fuel at their garages.
"Our suppliers have told us not to worry and that there will be a supply of fuel whenever we need it," said a spokesperson for the Old Pump Filling Station in Pentlepoir.
"Tuesday was an absolutely manic day, with a lot of motorists obviously worried that there was going to be a shortage at some point during the week. We took about three times as much as we would have taken this time last year.
"I think that a lot of the initial panic buying the public has been doing has been caused by the media getting carried away, but things have calmed down towards the end of the week," the spokesperson added.
Tenby's Fiveways Garage also relayed a similar story, as a spokesperson said: "We were relatively busy at the start of the week, but haven't experienced any amount of queues of vehicles spilling onto the road.
"I think that people have seen and heard television and radio reports of motorists starting to panic buy and that may have caused an initial surge at the pumps, but our suppliers have guaranteed us we'll always have a supply."
The crisis, however, has hit motorists hard in the pocket, with prices for unleaded petrol breaking the pound-a-litre mark in parts of the county.
Experts, though, say the price of petrol could fall by as much as four pence a litre by next week, as refineries are expected to start pumping extra oil stocks following the intervention of the International Energy Agency.
