County businesses who took part in Pembrokeshire Fish Week have reported a significant boost in trade during the seventh annual festival. The celebration of fish and fishing in Pembrokeshire, which finished on Sunday attracted tens of thousands of visitors to its 100-plus events all over the county. Alan Bowen, of Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism, said Saundersfoot's Midsummer Mackerel Madness on June 24 had been a huge success, with several thousand visitors and non-stop queues for food. "We sold more than 800 mackerel, and could have sold the same amount again," he said. John Elston, of Pete's Plaice in Tenby Harbour and JS Fish Direct, launched a new range of fish burgers made from 98 per cent of Pembrokeshire fish, during Fish Week. "They have gone down an absolute storm, and fresh fish sales have also increased," he said. Restaurants and hospitality establishments also received a boost. Mel Fairman, of the Blue Ball restaurant in Tenby said their Seafood and Shellfish Bonanza was very successful, while The Reef, also in Tenby, reported overwhelming interest for their 'Wine and Fish Fresh Tasting' evening. Meanwhile, the George's Restaurant in Haverfordwest said they had extended their Seafood Extravaganza from one to three days, in response to its popularity. The celebrity chef masterclass with BBC Masterchef judge John Torode at the Torch Theatre was also packed out and much enjoyed. Outdoor events were a hit, with Sue Burton, of Milford Haven Port Authority, describing the rock pool ramble at Manorbier and snorkel safari at Broad Haven with local schoolchildren as great fun. "It was so successful we have decided to try and make it an annual event," she said. Kate Morgan, food officer for Pembrokeshire County Council and Fish Week organiser, said there was phenomenal interest in the learn-to-fish days and angling competitions. "A lot of people are interested in attending similar follow up events, which should generate extra spin- offs for those businesses involved," she said. Pembrokeshire Fish Week is supported by Objective One and the Welsh Assembly Government.
