Fireworks and fiends have combined to create a spook-tacular success in Saundersfoot.
The village’s Big Bang Weekend, which links the fun and festivities of Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night, was enjoyed by thousands of people.
For the first time, the event featured two Saturday night fireworks displays - the Little Bang at an earlier time-slot for tiny tots, and the Big Bang for everyone to enjoy, which this year was set to music.
The weekend got off to a great start when 350 youngsters dressed up in their most horrible Hallowe’en garb for Friday’s Trick or Treat trail and disco, superbly organised by Wiseman’s Bridge Junior Rowing Club.
There was also a funfair on the harbour, a Spooky Bat Trail around the village businesses and a pumpkin carving competition.
The weekend was sponsored and co-ordinated by Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism, whose vice-chairman, Michael Slade, said: “It was a fantastic weekend - the best Big Bang so far. Everything was on our side, the weather, the overlap of two half-terms and the support from local businesses and members of the public.
“The village was packed all weekend and there was a real feel-good atmosphere everywhere you went.
“Both fireworks displays were absolutely brilliant, and our thanks must go to Galaxy Fireworks, who have done Saundersfoot proud once again.”
There were over 200 entries in the Spooky Bat Trail, with the winners drawn out of the hat to receive Hallowe’en goody bags. They were Daisy Norris, Red Roses; Zara Empson, Saundersfoot and Holy Gray, Peterborough.
The pumpkin competition was judged by Saundersfoot’s County Councillor Phil Baker and his wife Ann, together with Dilys Hackett, of Dilys Photography Gallery, where the entries made a spooky sight displayed on the forecourt.
The Under Seven category was won by Lucy, Reuben, Noah, Morgan, Katy and Piper, c/o Bay View Hotel, Stepaside, and they were rewarded with a family ticket to Folly Farm. Runners-up were Olivia Jones (five), Treorchy; Ruby Wiliams (four), Treorchy; and Ellis Smith (five), Caerphilly.
Coming first in the seven-11 category was Sophie Whitfield-Grey (eight), from Peterborough, who won a family ticket to Manor Wildlife Park. Runners-up were Dougie Suter (10), Saundersfoot; Anya Beynon (10), Saundersfoot; Nia Smith (11), Caerphilly; and Ranon Suter (seven), Saundersfoot.
The Over 12 winner, receiving a family pass to Heatherton, was Catlin Williams (13), of Treorchy. Runners-up were Chloe Noel (14), Saundersfoot; Eleanor Hayton (13), Saundersfoot; and Charlie Hughes (12), Saundersfoot.
