Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease which can strike at any age.

Young children can suffer enormous pain and distress from this potentially life-threatening illness which affects every part of the body and which, without appropriate treatment, can cause potential damage to all joints and major organs.

Although rheumatoid arthritis can lead to joint destruction, it is very different from osteoarthritis. The latter is often called 'wear and tear arthritis'.

It tends to affect older people and, although extremely painful, is usually restricted to single joints.

Because Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is caused by an as yet unexplained attack on the individual by his/her own immune system, it can lead to permanent fatigue, weight loss and extraordinary levels of pain.

In the past, sufferers of RA faced multiple rounds of surgery but, thanks to new drug treatments, the worst effects of this cruel disease can be modified.

Although there is no 'cure' at present, many people who have RA live successful and comfortable lives, thanks to the combination of early diagnosis, appropriate medication and excellent support from a hospital-based multidisciplinary team.

The Pembrokeshire Branch of the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society will be holding an 'Information Day' at Pembrokeshire College from 11 am to 3.30 pm on Saturday, September 11.

The programme for the day will be very full as a number of eminent consultants and specialists have given generously of their time in order to make presentations and answer questions about this often misunderstood disease.

There is no charge for attendance but, because this is a special occasion with significant speakers, the organisers would be grateful if anybody with an interest in RA could ensure attendance by 11.15 am at the latest, even if they are unable to stay for the full day.

Sandwiches and refreshments will be available for sale. There will be exhibitions of a wide range of useful aids and adaptations, specialised footwear, literature and information. There will also be a raffle with numerous prizes in support of the Pembrokeshire Branch of NRAS.
