As part of Seafair Haven 2022 the Island Trust and their tall ship Johanna Lucretia returned to Pembrokeshire for a week of activities with local schools.

Organised by Paula from the Tall Ships (Wales) Trust and in partnership with Sam & Amy from the Dragon LNG Darwin Experience, five pupils from Ysgol Greenhill set sail from Hobbs point early on Friday morning, arriving into Saundersfoot Harbour in time for tea.

Whilst onboard their sea legs were put to the test in the choppy conditions. During the full day sail, crew members Skipper Craig, 1st mate Ellie and 2nd mate Esme helped pupils develop their sailing skills, from learning nautical terms to how to raise the sails and steer the vessel.

Once the ship had reached Tenby it was time to slowly tow a plankton net through the water to collect a range of organisms from diatoms to sea louse and fish eggs. Sam and Amy were on hand to help pupils identify the different types of plankton, touching upon its importance from food chains to climate change and oxygen production.

Sam, manager of the Darwin Experience said:

“By linking science and sailing skills we hope to highlight the diverse range of careers available to these pupils in the future and that scientists aren’t always in a laboratory.

“The Island Trust and the Tall Ships (Wales) Trust are fantastic charities, this partnership has provided Pembrokeshire pupils with a unique experience that we all hope to be able to offer on an annual basis.”
