PEMBROKESHIRE Libraries invite children and families to take part in this year's Summer Reading Challenge: Read to the Beat.

Research shows that reading for pleasure is one of the biggest indicators of a child's future success, helping to build confidence, literacy skills, wellbeing and imagination. Throughout the summer, children will be encouraged to discover new books, complete reading challenges, and enjoy a programme of free library activities designed to bring stories to life.

Organised by The Reading Agency, the Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to discover the joy of reading during the school holidays. This year's theme celebrates the powerful connection between stories, music and creativity.

As part of the 2026 challenge, developed in partnership with Universal Music Group UK Pembrokeshire Libraries will host free, music-inspired family events.

Children can sign up from July 20 at any Pembrokeshire Library. Participation is completely free, and children can read any library books they choose while collecting rewards as they complete the challenge.

Whether they're already keen readers or just beginning their reading journey, every child is welcome. The challenge is designed to make reading fun, build confidence and encourage families to enjoy books together throughout the holidays.

Families can enjoy weekly activities at libraries across Pembrokeshire, including at Tenby, Tuesdays, 10-11am; Pembroke Dock, Wednesdays, 2-3pm; Milford Haven, Fridays 2-3pm and Haverfordwest, Fridays 11.30am-12.30pm.

Highlights include: Caravan of Storytellers – enchanting storytelling with live music; ABC Opera – interactive workshops where children can sing, act, dress up and create their own musical adventures; Sound Explorers – making musical instruments from everyday materials; Bongo Clive’s fun, inclusive Rhythm Shack workshops; and Wild Rhythm Adventure – animal-themed stories, sounds and musical fun.
