AS previously noted in this newspaper, the Arts Club are staging a tribute evening to Dylan Thomas. The event will be held in St. Johns Church Hall, Warren Street, on Friday, October 4, commencing at 7.30 pm.
Dylan was well known to members as twice he had addressed them in years well within living memory. Similarly the club was well known to the poet himself. Some say his genius and success came partly from his association with the club. This though cannot be proven.
Nevertheless, the connections will all be divulged during an evening of readings of extracts from his poetry and prose. There will be a song from 'Under Milk Wood' and references are made to Dylan's life and style by contemporaries.
It is difficult to reveal all, for that would kill the event, rather like broadcasting the conclusion to 'The Mousetrap'. Just not done.
The readings and song will be by club members. Your correspondent was permitted to sit in at the first rehearsal. It was rivetting, as well as amusing, for Dylan certainly had an impish sense of humour.
So come along. The entry is £2 for members and £4 for non members. Then in the second week (October 11) any new members paying the annual sub of £10 will enjoy that evening free of charge.
"Roll Up, Roll Up" as the old showman said. Unmissable.
