Last Thursday evening, a meeting was called by local Assembly Member, Christine Gwyther, to raise constituents' concerns about the lack of NHS dentists in the South Pembrokeshire area. Christine told the Tenby Observer: "The meeting was well attended by constituents who had written to me, or had seen the notice in the local media. "I am receiving many, many letters and telephone calls from local residents who are not able to register with an NHS dentist in South Pembrokeshire.  "Although it is not a problem for many parts of Wales, the lack of NHS dentists is a very real issue for us here in South Pembrokeshire. Many of our NHS dentists have gone private and are reluctant to work within the National Health Service when they can make so much money doing private practice. "The Pembrokeshire Local Health Board agreed to come along and tell residents what they are doing to attract dentists to the area, and to attract local dentists who have gone private back into the NHS. Ian Jones from Milford Haven, a dentist who has recently come back into the NHS from private practice, also attended to give us his experience. The manager of the new NHS practice in Whitland also attended. "It was a heated meeting, and quite rightly so. There was some very powerful evidence given by members of the audience about the sort of charges they were currently faced with, and the difficulty of accessing NHS dentistry.  "The new Whitland practice, paid for by the Welsh Assembly Government, was congratulated on the work they were doing.  Pembrokeshire has been given almost £1 million extra this year to provide more dentists, and the Local Health Board needs to spend this money. They will get even more money in April, but, again, I need to see concrete results for my constituents. "I am calling on the Pembrokeshire Local Health Board to use the money provided by the Welsh Assembly Government to set up a super surgery like Whitland here in the south to cover the Pembroke end of the county going as far as Tenby and Saundersfoot. Whitland is 30 miles away for many of my constituents.  "We need a modern, National Health dental practice here in the south of the county. The Welsh Assembly Government has provided the money. Now I expect some delivery from the Local Health Board."
