Over 50 ‘Cymru Knievels’ dare-devil dressed riders will descend on Tenby again tomorrow (Saturday) for an annual charity event and this year a world record attempt!

This head-turning fundraising group features riders and passengers dressed as the daredevil stunt-performer Evel Knievel – complete with flowing capes!

The RIDE Cymru motorcycle event officially started at Wrexham town centre yesterday (Thursday) and each year since 2012 a regular stop has been the quayside at Tenby, with the riders due again to congregate for their annual group pic at the resort’s harbour area between 10.30 and 11 am.

First undertaken in 2012, the annual event follows the outer perimeter roads and lanes of Wales, which is 1,070 miles - over 200 miles further than Lands End to John O’Groats.

The event is undertaken over five days, with entrants motorcycling for up to 10 hours per day.

To date the riders have raised over £76,000 and are on course to raise more than £20,000 in this year’s event for the charity Macmillan Cancer Support

In 2015 the event theme adopted the legendary dare devil ‘Evel Knievel’, and for the first time all riders wore his trademark Knievel suits all around Wales.

The ‘Cymru Knievels’ was a big success - bringing fun, colour, nostalgia and positivity to the event and the towns we pass on its perimeter route.

News spread to national magazines and also across the Atlantic, with Alicia Knievel-Vincent daughter of Evel learning of the event on the internet and sending a message of support prior to the 2017 event - ‘Your event is a great legacy to my father, he would have been very proud - and I too would like to one day join you and motorcycle around Wales’.

Support from the Knievel family has since been added with messages from Evel’s son Kelly too.

Day 3 of this year’s event will be started by the mayor of Carmarthen at 9 am on Saturday, before taking in - St Clears, Laugharne, Pendine, Amroth, Wiseman’s Bridge, Saundersfoot, Tenby, Manorbier Castle, Freshwater West, Angle, Pembroke Dock, Waterston, Milford Haven, before heading to Cardigan and Aberystwyth.

The riders have celebrity support including ITV weather presenter Ruth Wignall, Stereophonics bass player Richard Jones and Strictly Come Dancing star Danny John Jules, who will join the ride for select parts of the routes.

On their return to Wrexham on Bank Holiday Monday at 4.30 to 5 pm the riders will be joined by family, friends and supporters to attempt to gain the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Evel Knievel.
