Increasing concern over motorists persistently speeding on a busy stretch of road in Tenby has led to a call from town councillors for new speed restrictions to be introduced.

The call for the town's Upper and Lower Park Roads to have their speed limit reduced from 30 to 20 mph was made by Clr. Mike Evans when the issue was discussed at Tuesday night's meeting of the council.

Residents have deemed the road 'dangerous' due to the volume of motorists who break the speed limit on what is one of the main routes out of town. The road has also been frequently used by 'boy racers', who often race along the road late at night, driving at high speeds and causing noise disturbance to nearby residents.

"The boy racers who break the speed limit along Park Road certainly are a problem, as they circle the multi-storey car park and then head off down the stretch of road at phenomenal speeds," remarked Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter.

"It's the main route out of town, so the speeding issue really does need addressing from a safety point of view," she added.

"Residents who have raised the issue with me want to see a 20 mph speed limit introduced for the whole length of the road, and I for one believe that 30 mph has always been too fast for that section, so we seriously need to look at reducing the speed," agreed Clr. Mike Evans, who also suggested that the introduction of traffic calming measures could help.

"I have also spoken to the town's chief of police, who said that officers will target that stretch of road over the next few months," he added.

Councillors agreed that they should submit proposals to Pembrokeshire County Council for the speed limit to be reduced from 30 to 20 mph.

They also felt that the problem of boy racers using the multi-storey car park as a 'race circuit' could be addressed by restricting access to the upper levels after 8 pm, by introducing a possible barrier system to prevent cars entering and exiting as they please.

"Residents near the multi-storey have been constantly plagued by boy racers driving round and round at late hours and it's time it was stopped," stressed the Mayor.
