Members are reminded that the next meeting of the Cymrodorion Society is on Thursday, February 19, at 2.30 pm, at St. Johns schoolroom, when Miss Laura Davies will be talking about the development of the National Botanic Garden of Wales/Twf yr Ardd Fotaneg.
The January meeting was a highly successful one, when, despite the awful weather, a large number of members and friends came to enjoy the afternoon with 'Teulu Cerddorel.'
Paul Williams and his daughter Angharad, both deeply involved in the world of music, gave a very entertaining programme of word and music - Paul, in telling about his up-bringing amongst the 'Wenglish' in Glamorganshire, and his education and introduction to fluent Welsh speakers, kept everyone amused and interested. He told why he came to live in West Wales and to teach in Pembrokeshire, so that his young family could be brought up in the Welsh language and culture, despite the fact that the North Pembrokeshire dialect forced him to learn Welsh all over again!
Interspersed with Paul's stories, Angharad played some very beautiful, well-known classical pieces on the violin, and her father accompanied her on the piano.
It was altogether a most entertaining afternoon.
During the afternoon, the president of the society, Mr. Islwyn John, made a presentation to Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head, to thank her, on behalf of the society, for all her support during her tenure at St. Johns. Nanette has always encouraged the society to feel at home at St. Johns and was instrumental in getting the Cymrodorion Ladies Choir to sing in St. Johns' Gymanfa Ganu, which is the culmination of their annual Daffodil Festival. This year, under the leadership of Mrs. Phyl Williams, the group will sing once again at the Gymanfa Ganu, three or four Welsh items.
At February's meeting, the chairman, Mrs. Trevena Vincent, will be taking bookings, and menu choices, for the St. David's Day lunch. Cinio Dathlu Gwyl Dewi will be held on Friday, March 6, at the Broadmead Hotel. The special guest speaker this year will be the writer/poet Hefin Wyn. Mrs. Jean Booth (treasurer) will need payment for the lunch at the February meeting, so please bring your cheque books.
If you are not a member of the society, but wish to attend the lunch, please contact either the secretary, Mollie Neate, on 843147, or the chairman, Trevena, on 812419. If you'd like to join this friendly Welsh society which meets monthly from October through March, please contact the above named.
