Last week, the Hazelwell Club, Tenby, hosted the 2007-08 Tenby and District Coors Pool League finals, and it proved to be a cracking night, with new names being etched on trophies everywhere! In a reversal of fortunes from last season, BB's B were crowned Division One champions, with the Tenby Bowling Club taking runners-up. In Division Two an impressive Tenby Rugby Club claimed the title, with Diggers C taking second place.
TEAM KNOCKOUTS
The first matches to be played were the Team Knockouts. The Division One final was between Tenby Bowling Club and Tenby House. The Bowling Club got off to a flying start, winning the first two, and eventually proved too much for Tenby House, winning the contest 4-1. The Second Division Team Knockout final saw Tenby Rugby Club take on Milton Brewery. This turned out to be a close and hard fought match, with the rugby club taking the final frame to run out 4-3 winners.
LADIES' FINAL
The Ladies final was between Emma Cleevely from Diggers C and Charmaine Probert from Tenby Bowling Club. This match was also a very close affair, with Charmaine taking the lead twice, but with just one more frame required, Emma pulled it back to two-all, meaning it all came down to the deciding frame. Charmaine held her nerve brilliantly to claim the deciding frame, getting her name on the trophy for the first time.
DOUBLES FINAL
Next up saw the infamous Wayne John with doubles partner Dave John, from the Castle Inn, Manorbier, take on Ollie Hughes and Rob Day from Tenby Bowling Club in the Doubles Cup. Some skilful play in the first frame saw Ollie and Rob go one up. However, the tactical play from Dave and the potting master class from Wayne were too much for Ollie and Rob in the end, Wayne and Dave winning 3-1.
MAN ON A MISSION
The next three competitions were all about one man and his mission to take all the individual titles for himself. Rob Day from Tenby Bowling Club was in the Captains Cup, Masters and Singles final, but there were some brilliant players standing in his way. First up was Craig Guymer from Diggers D for the Captains title. Two players with an attacking style meant this match was all about potting, and there were some outstanding shots played by both men. However, Rob seemed to get the better of Craig, winning the contest 3-0, making it a hat-trick of Captains Cup wins for Rob. Second up was Jason, aka 'Eggie', from Tenby Rugby Club. Brimful of confidence, Jason found himself in his first Masters final against Rob, who was in his third. The match had it all, with some good safety from Jason and great potting from Rob. However, Rob's experience told in the end, winning the match 2-0 and making it a hat-trick of Masters wins. Next up was the title everybody wants - the Andrew Lewis Memorial Singles Cup. Rob Day found himself in his first singles final, after the disappointment of three consecutive semi-final losses in the previous years. Unfortunately for Rob, he was playing against Wayne John, a five times Singles champion. The match predictably started off with some great potting from both players, with Wayne surprisingly going in-off on the black in the first frame. Wayne wasted no time in the second frame, brushing Rob aside with consummate ease. Wayne did the same in the third, going into a convincing 2-1 lead. Frame four proved to be a turning point when Wayne left the black in the jaws of the pocket, leaving Rob in all sorts of trouble. Rob, however, managed to clear the table with a brilliant last red up the rail and had the black waiting over the pocket. Rob took the next frame, too, giving him a lead of 3-2. The match seemed to be heading to a decider, but Wayne was unfortunate in his positional play from his last yellow to the black. A safety shot from Wayne left Rob in no mans land with his last red stuck to the side rail. What happened next was not in the script, as Rob calmly cued a fantastic double on the red, leaving the cue ball in perfect position for an easy drop-in black. LANDLORDS CUP
The Landlords Cup was claimed by Terry John, aka 'Yakka', from the Castle Inn, Manorbier, who put in a good performance against chairman Keith Bailie from the Milton Brewery.
RAFFLE
A raffle was held on the night, with £63 raised. This money was donated to Wayne John, whose daughter suffers from cerebral palsy, and will be going towards her trip to go and swim with dolphins. Many thanks to all who bought tickets.
