For the last few decades, the place to be on the first Sunday in August has been Saundersfoot Carnival and as is usual on these occasions, the sun shone brightly. King George V playing fields was a blaze of colour and activity, with the main carnival ring surrounded by an exciting array of funfair rides and a myriad of stalls supporting local organisations and charities. Unfortunately, there was a dearth of carnival floats, something which appears to be happening all over the country nowadays, with more and more fun and fund-raisers being stifled by high insurance costs and fear of litigation. However, the poor turnout of floats was more than compensated by the wonderful turnout of fancy dress walkers. Organised by Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club in association with main sponsor, the Gower Hotel, Saundersfoot, the afternoon started with the crowning of the Carnival Queen and attendants by chairman of the community council, Clr. Don Poole. Following the traditional tour round the village, the procession reconvened in the parade ring for the judging. This was carried out by two couples from the Leicester area, who provided completely impartial decisions, albeit after much deliberation, so high was the standard and ingenuity of the entries. Results were: Best float: 1. St. Issell's Plumbing - Trotter International Traders. Under Seven walkers: 1. The Three Amigos; 2. Cavemen; 3. Snow White and the Dwarves. Aged seven to 11: 1. Recyclists; 2. Bring back Nanny; 3. The Simpsons. Over 11s: 1.118; 2. A Pair of Crutches; 3. Alice in Wonderland. This was followed by the Children's Sports, again organised by Saundersfoot Rotary Club. There were many entrants in all the age groups and the standard was high, no doubt many competitors having an eye on a place in the 2012 Olympics. The adults' wellie-throwing also produced some would-be Olympians and last year's record distances in both the male and female events were smashed by visitors - who had travelled from far afield to have the opportunity of lifting the coveted Golden Wellie trophies. The highlight of the afternoon was the show staged by the Hines School of Irish Dancing, who enthralled the large crowd with an exhausting but hugely artistic and well co-ordinated display of their art. The group comprised dancers of all ages, from the tiny learners to the experienced, award- winning artistes. All carnival-goers left that day feeling tired, tanned and highly satisfied. Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club would like to sincerely thank their sponsors: main sponsor - The Gower Hotel; fancy dress sponsors - The Famous £1 Shop, Redwing Travel, Hillcroft Garage and the Sands Nightspot; other village sponsors - Instrand, The Hean, The Argosy, Miss Daisy's, Suttons, The Spar, The Mulberry, Kook-A-Ba, Strand Antiques and Tea Rooms, Mermaid Gift Shop, Laugharne Bakery, The Old Chemist Inn, The Royal Oak, A.
