Sir,

I feel that I have to write in response to Rosemary Hayes's comments on school transport in last week's Observer.

I myself have four children, three of whom go to Greenhill School in Tenby. As a responsible parent, there is no way on this earth that I could allow any of my children to make their own way to school.

Therefore, I have two options left to me: send my children on a public service bus, that is always overcrowded, quite often breaks down, and is very often late arriving at school; option two is to take my children, which is what I do, knowing that they will arrive on time and safely.

The big drawback to this is that I am now adding to the already congested and very dangerous Heywood Lane.

I would like to ask Clr. Hayes, when was the last time she walked from Sandy Hill Road, up to the main road, along to the roundabout at New Hedges, across the roundabout, down the long main road, with no footpath or lighting, around a nasty bend, across the road again, down Serpentine Road to Greenhill, carrying a large bag full of books, games kit, musical instruments and lunch?

Please do not quote council expenditure to me or any of the other parents that have this to contend with. I should not have to pay for my children to go to school if there is not a safe well-lit route for them to take, and in this day and age when we are hearing of child abductions daily, surely the council should be putting safety first.

Finally, would Clr. Hayes be so vocal in this issue if it was her own children or grandchildren put in this position. When will the local authority listen and come and see for themselves.

Mrs. T. Dobbs,

9 Ferndale,

Saundersfoot.
