Town councillors have blasted irresponsible people who are abusing facilities provided in a newly-opened toddler park.

The Jubilee gardens, overlooking South Beach, was recently redeveloped by the town council to provide a facility for toddlers to play in, but has since seen many youngsters congregate in the area, with damage being caused to equipment.

At Tuesday night's meeting of the council, Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sandra Williams, said she was concerned by the number of teenagers gathering in the play area.

"When I was around that area on Monday night, the Jubilee was full of teenagers sitting on the swings, which is worrying," she said, suggesting that maybe the local PCSOs could monitor the area during the late evenings.

Recent damage caused to a child's bench in the play area was also noted by the town's Mayor.

"Every time an adult sits on a child's bench, it is likely to cause damage, and the last one that broke cost just over £50 to repair, so we must urge people to please be responsible," said Clr. Mrs. Julie Evans.

The Mayor also reported that she was concerned about youths congregating at the old hospital site and the dreadful state which the area was in.

"It's in a disgraceful state, anyone walking around the town who saw that would be disgusted," she said, with her colleague, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, agreeing and stating that she should send any photographic evidence to the county council to ask them what they intend on doing with the site.

Meanwhile, Clr. Mrs. Evans said that she had been in discussions with PCSO Idwal David, who was keen to see a multi-use games area opened in the town to cater for teenagers, with the Battery Gardens site a possible location.

Councillors gave their backing to the idea in principle and the go-ahead for the Mayor to make some further enquiries.
