Tenby councillors have given their backing to a scheme to extend facilities at local care and nursing home.

Plans to extend Park House Court, on Narberth Road, with 132 mixed tenure serviced care units, with associated communal facilities and access, to form a cohesive healthcare campus, have been referred to the Welsh Assembly Government, because the proposals were believed to be outside of Local Development Plan guidelines.

The application has now been passed to the Planning Inspectorate who will be arranging for an inspector to consider the issues involved and submit a report to the Welsh Ministers for their consideration.

Despite the healthcare site being outside the boundary of Tenby Town Council, members were asked for their comments in correspondence that came before them at their meeting on Tuesday night.

Clr. Mrs. Julie Evans said that she felt the town council should strongly support the development.

"There is insufficient housing of that nature for elderly people in the town. They'd be able to live in a secure environment with wonderful care facilities," she told her colleagues.

"The scheme will offer good quality accommodation next to the care facilities. I, too, personally think that as a town council we should support these plans whole-heartedly," concurred Clr. Mike Evans.
