Opposition to an idea to site a new skate park at Tenby’s Battery Gardens could see play park equipment moved to the location instead.

Deputy Mayor, Mrs. Christine Brown recently told her fellow members at Tenby town council that they were struggling to find a contractor to redevelop the current skate park area at the Jubilee, and suggested that Battery Gardens could be considered as a new spot if the current facility could not be extended.

The ‘Jubilee Play and Skate Park Association’ committee was formed last year to move forward with plans to extend the skateboard park overlooking the South Beach, with somewhere in the region of £130,000 funding required to enhance and extend the facility.

Clr. Mrs. Brown told members that the suggestion had come forward at a meeting of the Skate Park committee to try and develop a new facility, possibly at Battery Gardens - a pitch that has been a ‘bone of contention in the past’ she explained, as since the sensory garden there had been smashed up, the site had become a ‘barren piece of land’.

However, the idea has not been met positively by some locals, with Queens Parade resident Anne Birt stating that the gardens would be a ‘totally unsuitable place’ to suggest moving the skate park to, in a letter to the Observer.

“The park is a quiet haven for local elderly residents to meet on a sunny afternoon and sit chatting and admiring the views over to Caldey, South Beach and the Golf Course,” she wrote.

“Many other people visit the park, from families enjoying a picnic there in the summer to anyone who would like to sit in a peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of town or the beaches,” she continued.

Discussing the matter further at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Brown acknowledged some public opposition to a Battery Gardens skate park idea, but now wonders if Pembrokeshire County Council would consider moving the play equipment to that location to free up all of the Jubilee site for development of an extension to the skate facility.
