Sir,

We are residents of the top end of The Ridgeway, Saundersfoot, and are writing to express our concerns over the worsening traffic problem in this area.

Over the past few years, numerous telephone calls, letters and queries to various statutory bodies have had no effect other than to elicit a common response indicating a lack of responsibility or willingness to take action.

For example, in July 2002, Mr. and Mrs. Trimmings wrote to the county council.

In their reply, dated October 11, 2002, a Mr. Davies commented that 'In the case of The Ridgeway, there are no recorded personal injury accidents...'

Just a few months later, a motorcyclist was in collision with two cars outside Vine Cottage. We understand he spent some time in hospital with back injuries. The occupants of one of the cars were on the first day of their holiday, with their elderly parents and son in the car - what a welcome to this 'safe' corner of Wales.

More recently, on June 12, this year, Mrs. Chamberlain observed a vehicle speeding out of the village. The car hit the bank near the seat at the junction of Valley Road/Ridgeway, and swerved across the road, resulting in the rear left-hand tyre being blown. Mrs. Chamberlain offered assistance as the female passenger and children in the car were distressed; the driver declined and headed off along Fan Road with a flat tyre. The police were informed and a police presence along this stretch of road during the afternoon had a noticeable impact upon the speed of the traffic.

There have been many other incidents too numerous to catalogue in detail.

The problem of speed along the Ridgeway appears to be worsening. Our main concerns are:

• The danger of excessive speed and reckless driving on a blind corner incorporating a junction (Valley Road).

• Policy appears to be to wait until someone loses their life rather than take steps to prevent such a tragedy.

• The potential for an increase in speed along Fan Road and Ridgeway if traffic is diverted away from Valley Road.

• The negative impact on the quality of life of residents from

1. Noise pollution from speeding vehicles during 'rush hour' on weekday mornings and early evenings, and the early hours of Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning. These time slots do not appear to be seasonal.

2. Stress and anxiety when accessing or exiting our driveways.

Please note that we are not complaining about the volume of traffic. We live alongside a busy road that provides us all with good access to the village. We love Saundersfoot and believe it is in everyone's interest to make it as safe as possible for all who live, work and holiday here. The apparent total disregard for the law and the safety of others displayed by a minority of drivers is, we believe, now a very real cause for concern.
