PEMBROKE Mayor Cllr Jonathan Grimes was “absolutely delighted and incredibly proud” to be the first person in Pembrokeshire to sign up to the Pembrokeshire People First – Dream Team Charter.
Based in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire People First is charity run by and for people with learning disabilities and or autism.
The Dream Team brings together people with learning disabilities from across West Wales, using their own experiences and voices to help shape the decisions made by councils, health services and other organisations.
“This is about something that really matters: ensuring that people with learning disabilities and autistic people are treated with dignity, respect and equality, and have the same rights, choices and opportunities as everyone else,” said Cllr Grimes.
“At the heart of the Charter is a simple but powerful message: ‘Nothing about us, without us.’
“These are more than just words. By signing the Charter, I am making a commitment to champion its principles, help break down barriers and ensure that people are genuinely listened to, included and involved in the decisions that affect their lives.
“Everyone deserves to feel valued, to have their voice heard and to play a full and active part in their community.
“I am proud to support Pembrokeshire People First and the fantastic work of the Dream Team. I hope that my signing of the Charter will encourage other councillors, public bodies and organisations across Pembrokeshire to get behind this important initiative.”
The mayor and county councillor signed three sections, promising to make changes on the topics of rights, communication and support.
“Let’s make sure that everyone has a voice, everyone has a choice, and nobody is left behind,” he said.
Thanking Cllr Grimes for signing the charter, Pembrokeshire People First added: “Together we will make Pembrokeshire more accessible for everyone!”
