KATE Preston from Saundersfoot is recently out of hospital after nearly losing her life. Molly, her daughter, is running a half marathon this Sunday, June 6 and has already raised over £1,000 for the ICU at Glangwili.

“They saved my life and we’re forever grateful,” Kate says.

In March of this year, Kate went to the doctor with a chest infection. When the doctor checked her oxygen levels, they were low, so he called for an ambulance to take Kate to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest. She spent two days in Withybush before being transferred to Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen. Kate had fluid on her lungs which needed to be drained.

But things kept going from bad to worse:

“When I got there I went from having a chest infection to pneumonia to sepsis.”

Kate was put to sleep (sedated) but her condition continued to deteriorate. Her main organs began to fail.

At 2.30am on the Saturday morning, the doctor at the hospital rang Kate’s mother to break the devastating news to her and her family that Kate wasn’t going to make it.

Then something like a miracle happened.

A couple of days later, Kate’s condition began to improve. She started breathing for herself, and after 10 days they decided to wake her up.

“I came round, totally confused and wondering what on earth had happened to me,” Kate remembers.

“I am home now, slowly but surely recovering but it’s going to take time.

“My daughter, Molly Siswick, is running a half marathon in Swansea on Sunday June 7 and is raising money for the amazing staff at Glangwili ICU.

“We have already raised over £1,000 and we’re expecting more. Everyone has been so generous.”

On her fundraising page , Molly praises the staff at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and shares what it means to the family to see her mother recovering in their care:

“As many of you know, the Intensive Care Unit in Glangwili hospital has recently saved my mother’s life, providing her children and parents, close family and friends more time to make memories and have their loved one close.

“Without the 24/7 care and 110% effort from all the incredible staff, we’d have never been able to have our Kate home.”
